Having a small room doesn't mean you have to let go of luxury and elegance; it simply means you need to get creative

Pragati Gupta Saxena20 March 2017

Houzz India Contributor.I've always had my heart and soul channelled into one thing -- creativity. Amidst the hassles of life, one bright morning, life happened to me! Since then, I've been pursuing my passion. So one would find me either glued to my laptop, or in a chaotic room full of paper shavings and paints, or in sweats revamping the house, or doing the salsa while I whip up another dessert! Whatever it has to be, it must be creative!

It is a tiny room but it can make a powerful impression. A well-done-up powder room speaks volumes about your style. It is perhaps the challenge of fitting in elements for the sake of beauty in such a limited space that makes powder rooms my favourite spaces. Here are some inspirations to add a bit of serious oomph to this room.

Sarah St. Amand Interior Design, Inc.

1. Dress the walls with dynamic wallpaper
A powder room has no bathtub or shower fixtures, which frees us of the hassle of dealing with humidity and moisture. Which means we can say a big YES to wallpaper.

Since powder rooms are usually small, bringing in wallpaper can be an affordable option. So experiment away! You can go bold, bring in eclectic prints and motifs or go for unconventional colours. In this one, gold-patterned wallpaper with a copper base has been used to give an instant lift to a small space.

Apart from regular wallpaper, there is another very creative and economical hack. Here I introduce you to my favourite – chalkboard paint. Asian Paints and Rust-Oleum roll out blackboard paint for a very reasonable price. But if you can ransack your local markets, Agsar chalkboard paints can be a great deal to crack. Paint the walls with chalkboard paint (there are colours other than black available too) and have your guests scribble their love for you.

Tip: This is one of the greatest ways to turn any surface into a re-usable writing space. Why not DIY this in a bright colour? Here you go:

Materials:
Non-sanded grout
Latex paint in any colour
Mixing cup or bucket
Brush or roller
Paint-mixer drill attachment

Directions:
Mix the latex paint with the non-sanded grout in a cup or bucket, in a ratio of 1 part grout to 8 parts paint. So, if you’re mixing a small amount, mix one tablespoon grout with half a cup of paint. Ensure that all the grout is thoroughly mixed in – otherwise, the granules may be visible on the chalkboard.
Ta-daaah! It’s that simple!

2. Add a swoon-worthy mirror
I am a big fan of DIYs and love to take on home improvement projects. Here is an idea I like. In this powder room, the an old mirror frame has been painted and metal filigree added to it for a dazzling sun-burst look. Sounds fancy? You can try it too.

Even if you are not a DIY fan, there are enough options for gorgeous mirrors in the market. A mirror is a fantastic decor element – it instantly upgrades the look and feel of a place, especially in powder rooms.

Tip: You could install a full-length mirror on a wall. This not only gives the illusion of space but reflects more light into the tiny room. If not a wall-mounted one, then try a free-standing mirror – it will bring in loads of character to the space.

3. Style up with amenities
Bring sophistication to your powder room through softly rolled and neatly hung hand towels. Do you have wicker baskets lying around the house? Or that vintage tray from your grandmother’s collection? Put them to good use here. Add a bowl of floating flowers – fresh or otherwise. Perhaps a small basket of potpourri? If you like quirky, this space is the perfect canvas for your creativity.

Tip: You can install weathered-wood floating shelves, which would not only be useful for storage but also be budget-friendly. And just in case you have an old vintage ladder, you can reuse it as a shelf and towel rail.

4. Accessorise and personalise
Bring wall art into this space. Put up posters or framed family pictures; maybe you can even squeeze in a small rack of bookshelves on one wall. These can be used for storing reading material as well as displaying your curios.

Tip: As I mentioned earlier, powder rooms don’t suffer from the issues that moisture and spilt water can create, so rugs can be a great addition to this space. Consider going for a kilim or a dhurrie that can be washed easily.

5. Bring in a statement light
I love the minimalist look in this particular powder room. Then there’s the brilliant use of a table for the guests to keep their belongings, which doubles as storage for towels and soaps. But not to be missed are the pendant lights. A powder room should never be deprived of the much-needed drama that’s attached to its name. The right kind of lighting can help you set the right mood. Add backlights to the mirror for that magical glow while your guests touch up their make-up. A simple table lamp can go a long way in adding much-needed ambiance. Go further – whoever said that chandeliers were only for living rooms!
